At the end of the match in Chiavari, coach Roberto Donadoni commented on the performance of the team: “You know better than I do what it means to play on this pitch, where even the synthetic surface helps create difficulties for opponents, and there’s no question that they’ve turned this field into a fortress. We started well, we barely took any risks, and in fact we even created a few chances that we could, and should, have taken better advantage of. After going a man up, we should have managed things a bit better; maybe we weren’t great at that today, but it’s still an important result, earned with the right spirit.
I’m starting to see a cohesive group, with the right desire and motivation. The players take on board what we ask of them, and little by little we’re getting players back, even though they’ll still need time to find the proper match rhythm.
The group is eager to reproduce on the field what we work on during the week. We need to keep possession, move, and support one another. We still have to improve certain reads, when to choose one option over another, but the team responded to the difficulties, and today we added another building block. There are still many more to put in place if we want to get out of this tough situation as quickly as possible.
I’ll repeat what I said after the Sampdoria match: we need to stay grounded. We weren’t donkeys before, and we’re not phenomenal today. We must keep working with humility, because there is still a lot of hard work ahead of us to climb out of a difficult place in the standings.
Bandinelli? He has quality and intelligence, which helped him step in like this after so many months out. And Cassata was very disciplined in a role he hadn’t played in a long time. We need to improve our ball management because at times we lose possession far too easily. Nagy had a fever until last night, so we had to make other choices. Of course, I would prefer to have everyone available all the time, but right now I have the opportunity to try different solutions.
Mistakes can happen, these things occur, but when you make a choice, you need greater conviction. And maybe today on the wings we lacked a bit of that willingness to try and play; I saw a bit of hesitation and uncertainty in certain situations, and that cannot happen because it opens the door for opponents to create chances.
The next match? We need to be ready right away for Saturday’s game against Modena. We’ll only have a few days to prepare for a challenging opponent.
