Spezia returned to winning ways with a victory over Cesena at the Manuzzi, thanks to a brace from and a goal from Aurelio. At the final whistle, head coach Roberto Donadoni reflected on his team’s performance: “I can only say well done to the lads, because we reacted really well after going behind early on. We then conceded a second goal, and even then we didn’t give up. At times we may have been a bit naïve, but today we never dropped our heads.
The players who came on did very well too, they gave us a big boost. Physically, I saw a team that truly wanted to win. During breaks in play, when I went over to the boys, they were telling me, ‘They’re done, they’ve got nothing left and that makes me proud to coach a group like this. The only regret is not being able to give everyone as much playing time as I’d like, but that’s part of the game. We have to understand that we haven’t achieved anything yet and focus on building consistency after today’s win.
I’ve never had any doubts about these players because of the commitment I see from them during the week. That’s what I care about, the rest doesn’t interest me. What really matters is the group and its unity, seeing them all celebrate together. I think that’s today’s biggest victory.
If I look back at the last five or six matches, I don’t see games where Spezia truly deserved to lose outright. This is a very balanced league you can win or lose against anyone. What matters most is your attitude, and of course you always need a bit of luck. Today that attitude, that hunger to win, was there and it went our way. We certainly need to cut out some naïve mistakes, but tonight I’m genuinely satisfied".
