On the eve of the match against Sampdoria, head coach Roberto Donadoni spoke to the press in the media room: “Day by day we’re getting closer to giving 90 minutes to the new players who had been playing less until a few weeks ago. Beyond that, with so many new arrivals, we’re working to find the best possible balance. Despite the bad weather, we had a good week of training. Now our aim is to build continuity in both performances and results.
Ruggero has more minutes in his legs than Bonfanti and trained with the group for the first time today, while the situation with Giovanni is fairly similar. He’s had less game time recently and we don’t want to push him too hard, but both will be part of the squad travelling to Genoa. Finally, on Monday the transfer window will close and we’ll have our definitive squad available.
Lapadula is still not available and we’ll need a bit more patience with him. As for the attacking market, we’ll see how things develop in the final days, but right now we have options in that department and our focus has to be on the match.
It’s a real shame that our supporters won’t be able to follow the team to Genoa. They bear no responsibility at all, and it’s a decision that causes a lot of regret. Hopefully situations like this won’t happen again, because the fans’ support is fundamental and football loses its magic without them.
Sampdoria have made significant moves in the transfer market so far. All the new players—on both sides—will be eager to prove their worth, and tomorrow we’ll be playing in a stadium with great tradition, so all the ingredients are there for an important match.
What happened up to yesterday doesn’t matter; only tomorrow’s game does. We all know the league table, but it won’t make the difference tomorrow. What will make the difference are motivation, the desire to fight for every ball and the hunger to keep climbing the standings. We must stay focused on our performance and not on other factors that can only distract us and drain energy.
We’re improving in our game management. Against Avellino we did some positive things, but there are also aspects we absolutely have to improve, particularly in our decision-making. Against the Campani we often made the wrong choices when finishing several counter-attacks. The objective has to be turning chances into goals; it’s not enough to be left with the feeling of what might have been.
Romano? He has solid foundations. Some youthful mistakes can happen on the pitch, but it’s up to us to help him smooth them out and make the most of his qualities. I’m sure he’ll continue to grow, both through daily work and by developing better understanding with his teammates.
Bandinelli? He had already made himself available for the Palermo match because he was feeling good, which shows that everyone’s sensations were positive going into the Avellino game. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough, and we’re very sorry about his new injury. Now it’s right that he takes the time he needs to recover fully, because we can’t risk further setback, even though he’s a very positive lad who’s eager to help the team.
Another midfield addition? It would be good if someone arrives who can offer a tactical contribution, but I’ll never push to sign someone just for the sake of it.
We know that over the next three matches we could determine something important, but we have to take it one game at a time and try to get the maximum out of every performance".
