Coach Claudio Terzi’s post-match comments: “I’m very proud of my players. It may sound strange to say that after a defeat, but it’s true. Even a draw would have been harsh on us today. We delivered a top-level performance, especially considering we were reduced to ten men after just 20 minutes—most likely unfairly, because in my opinion Lorenzelli’s red card was excessive.
In the first 20 minutes, with both teams at full strength, we played almost entirely in Avellino’s half, against a side with strong individual quality. Then came the sending-off. Emmanuele could certainly have been a bit more careful and avoided going in with a straight leg, but he didn’t even touch his opponent, and playing for 70 minutes with ten men is extremely tough.
On the two goals we conceded, we made two mistakes—especially on the first one, where we simply needed to dig in a little more and be more alert after the red card. On the second goal, in a situation that was favourable for us, we could have avoided Avellino’s counter-attack. We could definitely have done better on those two occasions, but the attitude, the performance and the quality of our play were all of an extremely high level. Despite being a man down, we managed to keep control of the game, even though we had to sit deeper and stay more compact than usual.
I’m sorry about the defeat, especially for the lads, because the effort they put in deserved to be rewarded. Football, and sport in general, doesn’t always reward the team that plays better, and that’s both the beauty and the cruelty of this game. Still, I’m convinced—and we all must be, including the team, that with performances like this, we’ll take great satisfaction.
Today and tomorrow there’ll certainly be a bitter taste in our mouths because this was an undeserved defeat, but I’m sure that from Monday we’ll come back stronger than before, ready to go to Bari and make up for the points we didn’t get today".
